Ever since The Cooligans’ inception, we have experienced true joy and some disappointment. That’s what comes with being a fan of footy. We are stand-up comedians. We know joy. We know disappointment. We have been the cause of both of those emotions.
But what we experienced at Yankee Stadium on a Saturday afternoon is something that will never be forgotten in our minds. Babe Ruth probably turned in his grave after that loss. The Red Bulls demolished NYCFC 7-0 in what is now the worst loss in MLS history. It was the main event to MLS Rivalry Week and this was not the pay-per-view we expected. If you were allowed to throw in the towel in soccer, this would have been the match to do it.
It is now being called the Red Bull Wedding. A day that will live in infamy for NYCFC fans. The #RedBullWedding will be the cause of many post-traumatic stress breakdowns for quite some time. There’s even commemorative T-Shirts for the occasion. They were created so quickly, you would think they were printed before the opening whistle.
After the loss, Andrea Pirlo was very critical of the MLS. Saying there is “too much running, and too little play.” While we may not totally agree with his NYCFC midfielder who was left off of Italy’s national team for the Euros, there is some truth to his statement. It is pretty obvious that the skill of American players is not at the level of the rest of the world, but it’s probably not a statement that holds much weight after a 7-Nil loss. It sounds bitter. The MLS is a physical league and it can be tough to play in. But Andrea Pirlo’s poor physicality and lack of man marking has directly led to several opponent goals. So, yes, the MLS is not filled with a ton of players who possess the skill of a European footballer, but there is still no excuse for the poor fundamentals Pirlo has shown. The point is, just play, and kick ass, and collect your money. These comments are not helping the league.
